As of today March 14, 2012 I have been a photographer for three years. Praise God, I’m sincerely excited to share the story of this last year. I’ve learned so much about myself, photographic expression, and photographic technique.
Before I get into that, I want to say thank you to some people. First to Sarah Allen who is sincerely my best friend and loves me so much, and truly supports me in all of my creative endeavors. I love you Sarah and I’m so blessed that you are truly my best friend!
Thank you God for all the opportunities you’ve given me, and all the ways you’ve challenged me to grow this last year. I’m happily surrendered to your will.
Thank you Steve Skibbie, Derek Lapsley, Adam Gerling, Jasen Masters, and Carli Morgon for being such encouraging people to talk to. Your encouragement and insights do not fall onto deaf ears. Thank you Danielle Lacey, Alex Beadon, Anahy Ruelas (Congratulations on becoming a mom today!!!), and Anny To for being such inspiring artists and friends! Thank you Kathy Focca for being so freaking hilarious, real, and a friend. Thank you Jo Julia Ramsey for always treating me like a rock star! And for being such a good friend! (can’t wait for December so the three of us can finally meet and shoot the crap out of a wedding together! And hang out in real life like real life friends do.) Thank you to my core group of best friends Sarah + Ryan Reynolds, Diana + Kyle Reynolds (congratulations on becoming parents this year!), Andrea + Neal Powell, Dusti + Tyler Jones, and Melissa + Jason Lincicum. Thank you for praying for me, for supporting Sarah and I, and frankly for putting up with me during my depression. I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t call you guys my best friends. Thank you Breanne Alley for all the time you believed in me. Thank you Kathy + Tim Dersch and Christina Aguire for adopting me into your family. I Eric Clapton you guys so much. This list could seriously go on for SO very long. Thank you to all of my friends that I’ve been so fortunate to meet during this last three years.
So I’d like to share some of my favorite photos from this last year, and the reason they are either special to me, or important to my story.
In September Sarah and I got to go to Canada for her brother’s wedding (above). It was a sincere honor to be best man for Tony. We also got to finally meet our dear friend Kathy (below). This photo was my became the first photo I ever submitted into a competition.
The above photo was one of my first shots with my new Alien Bees B1600 flash. This is a big deal because I am finally able to compete with the sun. This photo was taken at 11am, and yes that is the actual sky. This sort of style was something I’d wanted to get into for so long.
The below photo is of my dear friends Grace + Andrew. I love it because Grace is a seriously witty and wonderful friend. I like to call Grace “my favorite jerk” what I really mean by that is she really knows how to deal with my sarcastic sense of humor and can really dish it back, and quick! When I met Andrew my heart was so happy for them. It really blesses me that these two are together. They are just so so perfect for each other!
The biggest change that occurred for me this year was I learned that I was finding too much of personal value it what I do. And therefore relying too much on what specific people thought of my work to determine my value. To stop this I’ve decided to refrain from publicly sharing my personal work. So far it has been so awesome! It has really worked. I’ve learned to see my photos for what I think of them. Knowing they are good, because they genuinely are good, and not because someone else told me so. It’s allowed me to realize that I don’t have to be so anxious to be a full time professional photographer. That what I really need to focus on is being the best I can be, and as time progresses I will gain more skill, knowledge, and a better ability to “see” the shots. And as I grow the rest will fall into place. This exercise in refraining from sharing personal work has really given me an enormous amount of peace. I praise God for the way He is using it to grow me.
That said, it’ll still be another month before I start sharing personal work again. But in the mean time I would like to give you a little teaser of my latest artwork.
Thank you so much for letting me share with you. I hope you find a way to express your heart today.
God Bless You,
